The City of Lodi has set dates for a free workshop for Storm Drain Detective students, using water fleas, otherwise known as Ceriodaphnia dubia, to determine toxicity levels in water.

This rigorous protocol uses a 48-hour survival test with water fleas, and is similar to the test the wastewater industry uses to determine whether treated wastewater (effluent) is safe enough to discharge to local waterways.
This is a wonderful introduction to a water scientist’s world. You’ll get to work at the lab bench, using tools of the trade to study water quality. We will test water from Lodi Lake, the Mokelumne River, stormwater runoff, and more.
If you’re a student and you’re interested in participating, speak to your Storm Drain Detectives adviser as soon as possible. Teachers, you are also welcome send one or two of your students to participate, then have them report the group’s findings to your classes. Students are also encouraged to write about the class (and take photos!) for the 2017 Mokelumne Current student newspaper.
