Painting Lodi’s Sandhill cranes

In November, fifth-graders at Heritage Elementary School had a unique opportunity to become nature artists.

The students were able to go on a Fly-In Tour at Woodbridge Ecological Reserve, a sneak preview of the tours offered each year during the Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival. After their up-close view of the ancient birds that migrate to the Lodi area each winter, they returned to the classroom with Lodi artist Marisa Redondo, who helped them paint watercolor reproductions of the birds they’d seen.

Their work was displayed at the Sandhill Crane Festival’s art show. Redondo now teams up with the Lodi Sandhill Crane Association to visit other classrooms and teach students how to draw and paint the area’s bird life.
